Humla and Upper Karnali

About Humla and Upper Karnali

The Karnali arises in Tibet near Mount Kailas from which four major rivers flow namely – Karnali, Indus, Sutlej, and Brahmaputra. What makes this river particular interesting to the river runner is the surprising steady gradient as it descends from the Himalayas to the Indian Plains. As a result, it gives some continuous and exhilarating whitewater with only a few kilometers which cannot be run – quite remarkable in our experience for a river of its length. It offers an exciting river trip for the kayakers who are looking for a major expedition. The Tibet border has now been opened for special trekking groups to Mount Kailash and there are few new lodges now. These help you to hire porters to carry your boats and gear down to the river, about 1000 meters below the town.
